Craniosacral Fascial Therapy (CFT) is a gentle healing modality that provides patients with a freely moving brain, spinal cord, and fascial web, all of which are critical to peak health. Craniosacral Fascial Therapy was founded by Dr. Barry Gillespie, who merged concepts from craniosacral therapy and myofascial release therapy, in the early 1980s.

In newborns and infants we have a wonderful opportunity to support their body in unwinding tensions and pulls on this internal craniosacral fascial web. These tensions and strains may accumulate through fetal development and positioning, the birthing process, and early life experiences. Through infant guided movements their body is supported as it unwinds tensions through the cranial-sacral system and out into the fascia, which surrounds and connects ALL body tissues. The approach uses gentle holding and featherlight touch as the infant initiates movements to unwind their own body.

Feeding can be supported through CFT because an infant who is able to feel steady and comfortable inside their own body can do the physical, physiological, and emotional regulation needed for successful feeding and growth. A calmer and more regulated infant can also have a positive impact on their parents and caregivers, which allows for the dyad (mother-baby feeding unit) as well as other caregivers to enjoy this tiny human and be even more responsive to their needs and development.

Feeling comfortable inside your own brain, body, and reflexes is key to well-being. CFT can encourage the body to unwind and promote the innate healing and homeostasis of the human body.

Great times to consider CFT are directly after the golden hour of life (the few hours directly following birth) or anytime an infant seems tight, is having feeding difficulty, or seems uncomfortable and "colicky".

CFT does not cure things, it follows and opens the body so the body can do it's own healing!

The mother’s story and experience is always central to her approach…we aren’t just feeding babies, we are making mothers and families. Her hope is that families leave visits feeling encouraged and empowered.
